3D Printed vs Traditional & Mass-Produced Plates: A Full Comparison

5 min read
Side-by-side comparison of a 3D printed plate with raised text next to a flat mass-produced novelty plate

If you've shopped for novelty or replica number plates on eBay, Amazon, Etsy, or in gift shops, you've probably seen a few different types - and the quality varies wildly. Here's how each type stacks up.

Stamped Metal Plates

The traditional option. Metal plates are stamped from aluminium or steel, then painted or coated.

Pros: Durable, weather-resistant, authentic weight and feel.

Cons: Limited colour options, slower to produce, heavier, more expensive, and usually only available in standard sizes.

Injection-Moulded Plastic

Mass-produced novelty plates, often found in gift shops and tourist spots.

Pros: Cheap, lightweight, widely available.

Cons: Generic designs, limited text options (usually pre-made names), no customisation, flat text with no depth.

Mass-Produced Marketplace Plates

The kind you find all over eBay, Amazon, and Etsy. Most are made overseas - flat printed on thin metal or plastic, generic sizes, limited colours. They're cheap, but they look and feel like it.

Pros: Low cost, fast shipping from some sellers.

Cons: Flat text that wears off over time, one-size-fits-all layouts (short text gets awkward spacing, long text is crammed in), no live preview - you type your text and hope for the best. If something goes wrong, good luck getting help from an overseas marketplace seller.

3D Printed Plates (What We Do)

Each PL8M8 plate is printed to order from a parametric 3D model in Melbourne. The text is physically raised from the surface - not printed flat or stuck on.

Pros:

  • Fully custom - any text, any colour combination, any size
  • Raised text - real depth and texture you can feel with your fingers
  • Parametric sizing - width automatically scales to fit your text with accurate proportions
  • Live 3D preview - rotate, zoom, change colours, and see exactly what you're getting before checkout
  • Full colour range - 25+ colours with multi-colour 3D printing (no paint, no stickers, no fading)
  • Multiple fixings - adhesive, velcro strips, screw holes, magnetic mounts, or the hot-swappable sheath system
  • Fast turnaround - printed and shipped in days from Melbourne
  • Affordable - starting from $12

Cons: PLA plastic isn't suited for extreme heat or prolonged UV exposure (see our care guide).

Which Should You Choose?

  • Want maximum durability for outdoor use? Metal is hard to beat - and we'll offer metal options soon.
  • Want a cheap novelty gift? Injection-moulded works, but you're stuck with pre-made designs.
  • Just want the lowest price? Marketplace plates exist, but expect flat printing, limited customisation, and impersonal service.
  • Want something custom, personal, and good quality? That's where 3D printing shines. You design it, we print it - made to order in Melbourne by a small Aussie business.
