How to Mount a Number Plate on Your Wall

You've got your custom plate. Now where does it go? Here's how to mount it on any wall surface - whether you own the place or rent.

Option 1: Adhesive Tape (No Holes)

Best for renters, plasterboard, glass, and smooth surfaces.

How to do it:

  1. Clean the wall surface with isopropyl alcohol (or a damp cloth if alcohol isn't available)
  2. Peel the backing from the pre-applied adhesive tape on the back of your plate
  3. Press the plate firmly against the wall and hold for 30 seconds
  4. Allow 24 hours for full bond strength before hanging anything from it

Removal: adhesive tape can be removed cleanly with dental floss or fishing line drawn slowly behind the plate. Any residue comes off with a dab of eucalyptus oil.

Option 2: Velcro Hanging Strips (Removable, No Holes)

Best for renters, painted walls, and anywhere you want easy repositioning or plate swapping.

How to do it:

  1. Clean both the wall and plate back with isopropyl alcohol
  2. Attach one side of the velcro strip to the plate and the matching side to the wall
  3. Press each side firmly for 30 seconds

Removal: Slowly peel the strip from the wall at a 90-degree angle. No residue, no damage.

Option 3: Screw Holes (Permanent)

Best for timber, brick, concrete, and permanent displays.

How to do it:

  1. Hold the plate against the wall where you want it. Use a spirit level to ensure it's straight.
  2. Mark the screw hole positions with a pencil
  3. For plasterboard: use wall anchors (butterfly clips or toggle bolts)
  4. For timber: drill pilot holes slightly smaller than the screws
  5. For brick/concrete: use a masonry bit and wall plugs
  6. Drive the supplied screws through the plate holes into the wall

Option 4: Magnetic Mount (Removable)

Best for metal surfaces like fridges, filing cabinets, tool boxes, and some doors.

How to do it:

  1. Check the surface is ferrous (magnetic) - test with a fridge magnet
  2. Place the plate. The embedded magnets hold it in place
  3. That's it - no tools, no adhesive, no holes

The magnets are strong enough to hold the plate securely but allow easy repositioning.

Option 5: Sheath / Holder

If you ordered a sheath (holder frame), mount the sheath to the wall using any of the methods above, then slide the plate in and out as needed. This is ideal for swapping plates or protecting the edges.

Where to Mount It

Popular spots:

  • Shed or garage wall - above the workbench, beside the door
  • Bedroom door - kids love having their name on the door
  • Bar area - line up a row of plates for decoration
  • Behind the desk - visible on video calls
